Does wearing braces (dental braces) invalidate or prevent wudu (ablution)?
- When braces are fitted to straighten the teeth, water does not touch the parts of the teeth covered by the braces. Is wudu valid in that case?
- Is it necessary to make wudu according to Maliki madhhab?
Dear Brother / Sister,
You can act in accordance with the decision of a religious and specialist dentist based on his examination regarding the issue.
If a specialist and religious dentist or psychologist decides that it is necessary for you to have braces fitted, it becomes permissible for you to have your teeth treated like that. If there is no medical and psychological disorder, it is not permissible to have the teeth treated with the purpose of esthetics.
It is sunnah to wash the mouth in wudu; therefore, it does not harm wudu. It is fard to wash the mouth in ghusl. Therefore, if the purpose is treatment, it does not harm wudu; there is no need to imitate other madhhabs.
