Is it permissible for a man to have epilation on his neck, shoulders, back and leg areas?

The Details of the Question

- I am disturbed by the hair on my neck, shoulders, back and leg areas. Little hair strands are constantly falling out on the floor at home.
- I would like to have the hair in this area removed by epilation if it is not a sin.
- Is there any religious objection for a man to have his body hair removed in this area?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

It is not religiously permissible for men to completely remove the hair on their legs, back and chest unless there is an obligation.

However, if the hair on a person’s shoulder, back and chest areas is too much to be considered normal and causes him/her to feel psychologically disturbed in society and to be tormented spiritually, or if this discomfort reaches a level that affects the peace of the family, there is no harm in removing it and making it normal. In this respect, the man who wants to have epilation with machine, wax or laser can do this procedure himself or his wife can support him.

However, unless there is an obligation such as medical treatment, it is not halal for a person to expose his private parts to non-mahram people, nor is it halal for the person performing this procedure to look at or touch those parts. (Marghinani, al- Hidaya, IV, 83-87)

It is not permissible for a man to expose the area between his navel and kneecap to another man since that area includes his private parts.

Epilation can be performed for areas that do not include private parts and that are not prohibited to pluck (such as the neck and armpits).
