The Answer
Dear Brother / Sister,
Menstruation is one of the characteristics distinguishing women from men. It is not something abnormal and ugly; it is something normal and a necessity of the nature of women.
Hayd (menstruation) in Arabic means flowing and it is the name of the monthly flow of blood from women. It is a dirty natural secretion from the womb and its period changes from woman to woman and based on their states.
The following is stated in a hadith:
"This hayd is something that Allah decreed for the daughters of Adam." (Bukhari, Hayd, 1, 7, Adahi, 3, 10; Muslim, Hajj, 119, 120; Abu Dawud, Manasik, 23)
