Special File Regarding Covering (Tasattur) and Headscarf
The headscarf, keeping women from men’s gaze and determining limits between genders, draws a line around the private zone with prohibition. The unity of a society is so bound to men’s honor that the criterion for this honor is women’s chastity preserved in the private zone.

The headscarf is mentioned in the Qur’an :
“ Let them ( women) draw their veils over their bosoms”. (the Qur’an, an-Nur, 24:31)
The word “humur” from this verse in the original text of the Qur’an is the plural form of the word “himar” which means headscarf.
Those who say “The word himar in this verse from the Qur’an only means covering not headscarf” are definitely mistaken. Even though in the root of this word, there are the meanings of “covering, drawing near”, different words derived from this root have also different meanings.
For example, from the same root, the word “hamr” means wine while the word “hamir” means yeast and “humar” means a person who had a hangover. The word “himar”, the matter of our discussion, has been used in the meaning of headscarf and outfit that covers the body.
