According to what is reported from Abu Hurayra,
the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,
“By Allah, I ask for forgiveness from Allah more than seventy times a day and repent to Him.”
Bukhari, Daawat 3.
According to the hadith, it is sunnah to ask for forgiveness by saying,
أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ
(Astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilayh)
“I ask forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him.”
