Why does the muezzin put his hands on his ears when he calls adhan?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

It is mustahab for the muezzin to put the tips of his index fingers in his ears or to put his hands on his ears to help his voice sound sonorous. For, the Prophet (pbuh) ordered Hz. Bilal to do so since it helps the voice sound louder. (Nasbur-Raya, 1/278) It is also permissible for the muezzin to call adhan without putting his fingers in his ears. For, putting the fingers in ears is not an essential sunnah. (see Hidaya, Adhan chapter)

Acting as a muezzin is regarded as one of the most virtuous righteous deeds. The Prophet mentioned the importance of the duty of a muezzin and the virtue of calling adhan. (see Bukhari, Adhan, 4, 9; Abu Dawud, Salat, 60) Those narrations form the source of the decrees related to being a muezzin in fiqh literature.

It is necessary for a muezzin to have reached the age of tamyiz. The muezzin must have knowledge about the times of prayer. According to the majority of the scholars, it is mustahab for the same person to be both imam and muezzin. It is debatable which one of these two duties is more virtuous. Acting upon the fact that the Messenger of Allah had more than one muezzin in Madinah, it is decreed that more than one muezzin can be employed in a mosque. (Bayhaqi, as-Sunanul-Kubra, Haydarabad I/429)

It is mustahab for the muezzin to have a sonorous and beautiful voice, to call adhan while standing and on a high place, by calling it slowly so that the listeners will repeat it, to put the tips of his index fingers in his ears or to put his hands on his ears to help his voice sound sonorous, to turn toward the qiblah, to turn his face to the right side while saying "hayya alas-salah", to turn his face to the left side while saying "hayya alal-falah", to say “assalatu khayrun minan-nawm” while calling the adhan of the morning prayer, to walk around the minaret while calling the adhan and to have wudu.
