What is the wisdom behind reading the phrase "wa jalla thanauk" while reading the supplication “Subhanaka” in janazah prayer?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

It is indicated in resources like al-Asl and an-Nawadir that it is more appropriate for that phrase not to be read except in janazah prayer because it is more appropriate for the place of supplication there and its secrets and wisdom. It is not possible to praise Allah as it is necessary. When we pray for our believing brother in janazah prayer, we read the supplication Subhanaka at the beginning of the prayer as we do in other prayers. However, we include the phrase "WA JALLA THANAUK (AND YOUR PRAISE IS GLORIFIED)" when we perform janazah prayer. There are several reasons for it:

1. Every supplication and every letter and sentence in a supplication has a place; the same gate of blessing and mercy is not opened if it is said in another place. In that case, the place of blessing and mercy of "WA JALLA THANAUK" is in janazah prayer.

2. When we wish Allah's mercy and pardoning for the believing brother that died, we try to express His loftiness, greatness, power, mercy and help with "SUBHANAKA" first. From this viewpoint, we wish His vast mercy and pardoning. By saying, "WA JALLA THANAUK", we try to say in our heart that it is not possible to reach the highness of His mercy and pardoning, and his greatness and magnificence, and that He is worthy of the highest praise; thus, we express this with the sentence "WA JALLA THANAUK".

3. The cure given by this sentence to the heart when it is said in janazah prayer is not so effective when it is said in somewhere else. Therefore, it is beneficial to utter supplications as they are narrated. It is necessary to evaluate the cure to be given the sentence "WA JALLA THANAUK" from this viewpoint too.
