There are degrees of looking at haram things; there is a big difference between looking at a woman with lust and a woman catching one’s eye. Man is not held responsible when something catches his eye; however, when he looks at a woman carefully and lustfully, he is regarded to have committed a sin.
Similarly, it is permissible for a boy to answer the question of a girl or to speak to a girl about something at school unless they remain alone. However, it must be something necessary; otherwise, it is not permissible.
