Dear Brother / Sister,
“O ye who believe! Guard your own souls: If ye follow (right) guidance, no hurt can come to you from those who stray. The goal of you all is to Allah: it is He that will show you the truth of all that ye do.”(al-Maida, 5/105) Personal responsibility should be understood from the verse above. That is, both personal deeds and social duties like “enjoining the good and forbidding the evil” are meant by the statement “Guard your own souls.” Consequently, it is essential for everybody to fulfill their own duties. The following hadith narrations shed light on the issue:
“How good is a person who is busy with his own mistakes, which do not allow him to be engaged in the mistakes of others.” (Zaynul-Iraqi, Takhriju Ahadithil-Ihya-together with Ihya - 1/86; Haythami, Majmauz-Zawaid, 10/229)
“If Allah wants goodness for a person, He creates a preacher in his inner realm that encourages him to do good deeds and keeps him away from bad deeds.” (Kanzul-Ummal, h. No: 30762)
