Dear Brother / Sister,
It is enough to read at least three short verses or one long verse that is as long as three short verses after the chapter of al-Fatiha in the first two rak'ahs of fard prayers.
Qira'ah (reading the Quran) is fard in all rak'ahs of supererogatory prayers and witr prayer, and in any two rak'ahs of fard prayers. The following is stated in the Quran:
"…Read ye, therefore, of the Qur'an as much as may be easy for you." (al-Muzammil, 73/20).
The order here indicates wujub (obligation). The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) stated the following:
"There is no prayer without qira'ah." (Muslim, Salat, 42; Abu Dawud, Salat, 132, 167)
The amount of qira'ah that is fard is a verse that contains at least six letters according to Abu Hanifa, like the following verses: "Thumma nazara (then, he looked)" (al-Muddaththir, 74/21), "Lam yalid (He did not beget)" (al-Ikhlas, 112/3). The original form of this verse is "lam yawlid"; so, there are six letters in its original form. According to Abu Yusuf, Imam Muhammad ash-Shaybani and another narration from Abu Hanifa, qira'ah in a prayer consists of at least three short verses or one long verse that is as long as three short verses in each rak'ah. This is appropriate in terms of caution. (al-Qasani, Badayiu's-Sanayi', Beirut 1328/1910, I, 110; Ibnu'l-Humam, Fathu'l-Qadir, Cairo, n.d., I, 193, 205, 222, ff.; az-Zaylai, Tabyinu'l Haqaiq, l, 104, ff.; Ibn Abidin, Raddu'l-Mukhtar, Egypt, nd., I, 415)
It is wajib not fard to perform qira'ah in the first two rak'ahs of four-rak'ah fard prayers. It is reported that Hz. Ali (d. 40/660) said, "The qira'ah in the first two rak'ahs replaces the qira'ah in the last two rak'ahs." Abdullah b. Mas'ud (d 32, 652) and Hz. Aisha (d. 57/676) said that a person who performed a fard prayer could read the Quran or glorify Allah in the last two rak'ahs. It is like reading the chapter of al-Fatiha, another chapter or three verses. (az-Zuhayli, al-Fiqhu'l-Islam wa Adillatuh, Damascus 1405/1985, I. 646)
