Is it true that Hz. Ali said, "There is no good in the reading in which the Quran is not understood and is not contemplated"?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

- The following statement exists in a long article reported as the statement of Hz. Ali:

“... Know it very well that there is no good in the worship that does not include understanding and knowledge, in science that does not include effort to understand and realize and in reading that does not include contemplation." (see Kanzul-Ummal. 29388)

- We understand from the statement above that the greatest aim of a person who reads a book, especially the Quran, must be to understand it.

However, it will be wrong to deduce from the statement above that there will be no thawabs for a person who reads the Quran without understanding or contemplating because the statements like the one above aim to express the ideal way.

It is a fact that the reward of a person who reads the Quran by understanding it is not the same as the one who reads it without understanding it. Similarly, the prayer of a person who performs prayers in awe and by knowing what he is doing is different from the prayers of a person who performs them heedlessly.

However, it is also a fact that a person who does the fard deeds of prayer is regarded to have fulfilled the fard duty and his prayer is valid even if he does it heedlessly. Similarly, a person who reads the Quran will get his thawab and reward even if he does not understand its meaning.
