Dear Brother / Sister,
The Prophet (pbuh) forbade it. Abdullah b. Amr narrates:
"I was a little boy. My mother called me one day when the Prophet was sitting in our house and said,
'Come here and I will give you something.' The Prophet said to my mother,
'What did you intend to give him?' My mother said,
' I will give him some dates.' Thereupon, the Prophet (pbuh) said,
'If you were not to give him anything, a lie would be recorded against you.'" (Abu Dawud, Adab, 88)
The Prophet (pbuh) warns us about something important in the hadith. He advises parents not to promise their children things that they will not do. Such a deed will cause the parents to sin by telling a lie and will have a negative effect on the ethics of the children.
