The Details of the Question
- Does the practice of calling adhan into the ear of a baby exist in our religion? Did the Prophet practice it?
The Answer
Dear Brother / Sister,
Yes, calling adhan into the ear of a baby is a sunnah that has been practiced for fifteen hundred years by the ummah.
Abu Rafi narrates:
"I saw the Prophet (pbuh) call adhan into the ear of Hz. Hasan when he was born." (Abu Dawud, Adab, 107; Tirmidhi, Adahi, 16; Ahmad b. Hanbal, VI/9, 291)
There are narrations stating that the Prophet (pbuh) advised Muslims to call adhan into the right ear of the newborn baby and iqamah into the left ear. (see Ghazali, Ihya, II/55; Zaynul-Iraqi, Takhriju Ahadithil-Ihya, with Ihya)
