It is necessary to join any janazah prayer when one comes across with it?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Janazah Prayer:

It is fard al-kifaya to perform janazah prayer. When it is performed by one or more people, the fard is fulfilled. It is enough even when only the imam performs it.

However, it is stated in hadiths that the more people perform a janazah prayer, the more forgiveness and mercy the dead person will receive:

"If a congregation of about a hundred believers performs janazah prayer for a person and prays for his forgiveness, their prayer for him will be accepted."

In another narration, the number is mentioned as forty. If it is understood that a person was buried without a janazah prayer, janazah prayer for that person is prayed next to his grave.

Janazah prayer of a person who kills his parents, highwaymen who waylay and the rebels who revolt against the Islamic state is not performed.

The conditions of cleanliness from hadath and najasah (virtual and material impurity), turning toward the qiblah, covering awrah places and niyyah, which are necessary in other prayers, are also necessary in janazah prayer. In addition, the following conditions are necessary:

1. The dead person must be a Muslim.

2. The body of the dead person must be on the ground, not on a vehicle.

3. The dead body must be present. It is not permissible to perform janazah prayer in the absence of the dead person in Hanafi madhhab.

4. The dead body must be in the front, not at the back. Whatever invalidates other prayers invalidates janazah prayer too; however, janazah prayer is not invalidated when women and men are in the same row. The imam that leads the prayer stands behind the chest of the dead body. The dead body is placed in such a way that the right side of the body faces the qiblah.
