The Details of the Question

Is fasting invalidated if a person takes a bath arbitrarily, not because of a necessity, when he is fasting? Is it makruh?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Fasting is not invalidated due to taking a bath even if it is done arbitrarily. Besides, fasting is not invalidated if water leaks through the holes of hair.

It is permissible to take a bath while fasting. However, it is makruh to rinse the mouth and nose in order to cool in Ramadan or to take a bath with cold water according to Abu Hanifa. It is not makruh according to Abu Yusuf.

As for water entering the ear, there is a channel between the ear and the throat but the eardrum blocks this channel; so, the water that enters the ear does not reach the throat. Therefore, the water that enters the ear does not invalidate fasting. Even if there is a hole in the eardrum, fasting is not invalidated unless the water that enters the ear goes to the stomach by reaching the throat.
