- Is there any information that he died of the plague?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Some of the narrations in our sources regarding the death of the Prophet (pbuh) are as follows:

The illness of our Prophet (pbuh) started on the last night of Safar, on Wednesday, after he went to Baqiyyul-Gharkad cemetery and returned home with a “headache”.

Aisha (ra) says: “When the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) returned from the Baqiyy cemetery, he found me with a headache.

I was saying, “O my head!” The Messenger of Allah said, “By Allah, Aisha! I should say ‘O my head!’.

The headache of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) worsened gradually and his illness lasted for thirteen days.

Diseases of the Prophet:

Poisoning, fever (severe malaria) and Buhha (clogged trachea and thickening and hoarseness of the voice).

During his illness, the Prophet (pbuh) said to Aisha, “O Aisha! I sometimes feel the pain of the poisonous meat I tasted in Khaybar. Right now, I feel that the vein of my heart has ruptured!”

Anas b. Malik said: “I saw the trace and effect of that poison on the uvula of the Messenger of Allah.”

Umm Bishr b. Bara states the following:

“When the Messenger of Allah fell ill with the disease that resulted in his death, I went to him. He was having a fit of fever. I touched his forehead with my hand and said,

‘O Messenger of Allah! I see that you have been afflicted with a fever no one has caught!’ The Messenger of Allah said:

“Just as the rewards that will be given to us are increased so too are inflictions increased for us!”

He stated that Bishr’s son had died due to being poisoned by the mutton he ate and that he had been poisoned in the same way:

“O Umm Bishr! I think that this disease is only due to that poisoning! I feel that the vein in my heart has ruptured due to the pain of the poisonous meat that I tasted with your son in Khaybar.” (See Bukhari, Maghazi, 83; Darimi, Muqaddima, 11; Musnadu Ahmad, VI/18; Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Hisham, Sirah, 4/291-292; Ibn Sa’d, 2/206; Tarikhu Tabari, 3/190; Balazuri, 1/544; Waqidi, Maghazi, 3/679

As it can be understood from those narrations, what caused the death of the Prophet (pbuh) was the poisonous meat he ate in Khaybar three years before his death.

Although there are many inappropriate and baseless claims and slanders regarding the death of our Beloved Prophet (pbuh) in some websites, none of those slanders have any basis because such claims are not based on any sound source; they show the malevolent intentions of malicious people. We advise you not to believe such false information.
