Can we perform fasting without saying the intention with the tongue? If we eat at night and go to bed without saying intention, can we perform fasting the next day?
Dear Brother / Sister,
The conditions for fasting to be sound:
There are two conditions that are necessary: The first one is to intend; the second one is (for women) to be cleaned from menstruation and puerperum.
As it is known, intention is a determination that belongs to the heart. When a person knows through his heart that he will perform fasting and decides, it is regarded as intention. If a person knows that he is fasting, it is regarded as intention. It is sunnah to say it through the tongue. It is written like this in Nahr al-Faiq. (Fatawa al-Hindiyya, I/195).
It is essential to intend every day in the month of Ramadan. (Fathul-Qadir, II/46) For, the fasting of every day is a separate deed of worshipping.
Accordingly, a person who knows through his heart that he will fast can eat at night and perform fasting; saying the intention through the tongue is not obligatory.
