Can a man perform prayers in congregation with his wife and children at home?

The Details of the Question

In that case, can the woman act as a muezzin? Does she have to stand behind her husband? Can she stand on his right, one step behind him?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

It is sunnah al muakkadah close to wajib for believing men to perform five daily prayers in congregation. The Prophet (pbuh) performed all of his prayers in congregation; in addition, he mentioned the virtues of performing prayers in congregation in many hadiths and advised Muslims not to be deprived of the thawab of congregation.

It is not sunnah al-muakkadah for women to perform prayers in congregation but they can have their shares from this thawab when they find an opportunity.

One of the conditions of being an imam is being male. Therefore, a woman cannot lead prayers to men. The prayer is valid when a woman leads a prayer to other women but it is makruh. If women perform a prayer in congregation, the woman who leads the prayer stands in the middle; she does not stand in front of them. It is makruh for the woman who leads the prayer to stand at the front. It is better and more virtuous for women to perform prayers alone instead of in congregation among women.

You can perform prayers in congregation at home. The members of the family stand based on the following order in prayer:

The father becomes the imam; the boys stand behind him; the mother stands one rank behind the boys and the girls stand one rank behind her. However, if the place is not big enough, they stand one foot behind another. They perform the prayer in congregation.

If there is only the wife and the husband at home, the man becomes the imam and the woman follows him. The woman stands one rank behind the man. However, if the place is not big enough, she can stand close behind him without passing the length of his heels. If she stands on the same line, the prayer is invalidated.

It is sunnah to perform prayers in congregation like that. Those who pray like that receive the thawab of congregation. The differences of this prayer from the other prayers performed in congregation are the issues mentioned above.

A woman cannot act as a muezzin in the presence of non-mahram men. However, it is permissible for her to act as a muezzin when she is with her husband and children.

We also want to remind the following:

If the wife and husband perform the fard of the same prayer individually, not in congregation, it is permissible for them to stand next to each other.

When a prayer is performed at home, mahram or non-mahram women of the man can join the congregation. If there are also male relatives, they can form ranks as described above.

The performance of prayers in congregation at home is important in that it causes the formation of a spiritual atmosphere at home. Thus, even the children who have not reached the age of performing prayers will taste the pleasure of prayer in their spirits with the joy of joining the congregation. Thus, the prayer is performed in time at home.
