Is it haram to cremate the dead body in Islam? Where will the spirit of the dead person be if his body is cremated and its ashes fly away?

The Details of the Question

How will the spirit of a dead body that is cremated and whose ashes fly away suffer from grave torture? What will happen to the spirits of the mummified dead bodies? Their bodies do not decay; their bones are not squeezed; they cannot be eaten by worms and snakes.

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

It is not permissible to cremate a body. A person whose body is cremated or mummified can also suffer grave torture.

According to our religion, it is necessary for dead bodies to be enshrouded and buried under the ground. It is stated in the Quran that this practice was taught to man by Allah and that Hz. Adam's son who learned what to do with the dead body of his brother from a crow said,

"Woe is me!' Was I not even, able to be as this raven and to hide the shame of my brother?" (al-Maida, 5/31)

It is indirectly stated in other verses that a dead body needs to be buried. (Taha, 20/ 55; al-Mursalat, 77/25-26; Abasa 80/21-22)

Burying the dead body under the ground has a lot of wisdoms like the cleanliness of the environment, health, protecting human prestige and reminding death. (see Mustafa Uzunpostalcı, "Defin", Diyanet İslam Ansiklopedisi, IX/86)

Besides, the following hadith is reported from the Prophet (pbuh) about the dead body:

"Breaking a bone of the dead body is like breaking his bone when he was alive." (Muwatta, Janaiz 15; Abu Dawud, Janaiz 58-60; Ibn Majah, Janaiz, 63)

That is, it is not permissible to break a bone of a living person; similarly, it is not permissible to break a bone of a dead body, either. Cremating the dead body can be compared to this.
