Does a Shafii person who starts to follow the imam in the second rak’ah read "Wajjahtu" supplication?

The Details of the Question

If a Shafii person catches up with the imam in the prostration of the first rak’ah, does he have to read "Wajjahtu" supplication before al-Fatiha when he stands up for the second rak’ah?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

In that case, a Shafii person is regarded to have reached the second rak’ah.

When a person catches up with the imam in the second rak’ah, this second rak’ah is regarded as his first rak’ah. For instance, when a person who starts to follow the imam in the second rak’ah of the morning prayer completes what he has missed after the salutation of the imam, this second rak’ah is regarded as his first rak’ah; therefore, even if he has read the qunut supplication with the imam in the rak’ah that he caught up with the imam, it becomes sunnah for him to read the qunut supplication in the rak’ah that he performs alone. (see Mehmet Keskin, Büyük Şafii İlmihali, p.228)

Such a person does not have to read Wajjahtu supplication.
