Is it permissible to have braces fitted on the teeth?
Some of my front teeth seem intermingled and irregular. This disturbs me in terms of appearance but I do not think that it is harmful in terms of health. Is it permissible for me to have braces fitted so that my teeth will seem neat?
Dear Brother / Sister,
You can act in accordance with the decision of a religious and specialist dentist based on his examination regarding the issue.
If a specialist and religious dentist or psychologist decides that it is necessary for you to have braces fitted, it becomes permissible for you to have your teeth treated like that.
If there is no medical and psychological disorder, it is not permissible to have the teeth treated with the purpose of esthetics.
Since rinsing the mouth in ablution (wuḍūʾ) is a sunnah, it does not invalidate the ablution. In ritual bathing (ghusl), however, rinsing the mouth is obligatory. Therefore, if it is done for medical treatment, it does not prevent the validity of ghusl; there is no need to follow another school of law.
