If adhan is not read in the ear of a baby, can it be read afterwards?
Can anything be done for an adult person in whose ear adhan was not read when he was born?
Dear Brother / Sister,
The practice of reading adhan and iqamah in a baby’s ear comes from the practice of the Prophet (pbuh) himself. According to what is reported in Sunan at-Tirmidhi, when Hz. Hasan was born, the Prophet (pbuh) read adhan in his right ear. (Tirmidhi, Adahi:15)
According to Hz. Husayn’s narration, the Prophet (pbuh) stated the following about the wisdom behind this practice:
“If a person has a child and reads adhan in his right ear and iqamah in his left ear, the illness of umm sibyan (jinn) will not harm him.”(Faydul-Qadir, 6:237)
Adhan and iqamah is the first suggestion of belief to the child. For, the principles of the religion like takbir, tawhid, prophethood and prayer are present in the meaning and content of adhan.
There is no religious drawback to reading adhan in the ear of a person in whose ear adhan was not read when he was born. However, this reading is not like the reading when he was born.
It is Sunnah to read adhan and iqamah in a baby’s ear; therefore, it is not a sin if it was not read in time.
