According to Shafii and Hanafi maddhabs, what happens if a person who misses fasting in Ramadan and performs it one year later?

The Details of the Question

When should fasting that is missed be performed?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

The fasting that is missed in Ramadan must be performed before the next Ramadan comes. It is mandub to hurry to perform missed fasting. It is wajib to endeavor to perform any deed of worshipping that is missed.

It is wajib to hurry to perform missed fasting before there are enough days for the following Ramadan to start.

Shafiis hold the view that if a person missed fasting in Ramadan without any religious excuse, he has to hurry to perform it. It is makruh for a person who missed fard fasting in Ramadan to perform nafilah fasting.

If a person who has some missed fasting that he has not performed from the previous Ramadan reaches Ramadan, he needs to perform the missed fasting after Ramadan and pay fidyah according to the majority of the scholars.

According to Hanafis he does not have to pay fidyah whether he delayed fasting with or without an excuse. According to Shafiis, a separate fidyah is necessary for every year fasting is delayed. (see Wahba Zuhayli, Isl. Fiqh. Enc., III/206)
