Will you explain verse 31 of the chapter of al-Mursalat?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

The translation of verses 29-31 of the chapter of al-Mursalat is as follows:

"29. (It will be said:) "Depart ye to that which ye used to reject as false!
30. Depart ye to a Shadow (of smoke ascending) in three columns,
31. (Which yields) no shade of coolness, and is of no use against the fierce Blaze."

Its tafsir (interpretation):

30. Go and sit in the shade of intense smoke, that is, the smoke of Hell that is divided into three.
31. It will not provide shade to those under it; nor will it protect from the heat of the sun like shadow that grows longer. It cannot keep the tongues of the fire that come from all directions. Tabari states the following:

This shade will protect them neither from the heat of Hell nor its blaze. It is as follows:

A smoke rises from the fuels of Hell. When it rises, it is divided into three. (1) Tafsir scholars state the following:

Allah gave penalty the name shadow in order to mock those who deserve penalty; believers are in the shade and next to water springs. Criminals are exposed to a fire that penetrates into them, boiling water and pitch-black smoke. When the situation is like that, naming the thing that they are exposed to as shadow can be only irony.
