Does swearing/cursing invalidate wudu?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

The religion of Islam is against all kinds of deeds and hurting. For, Islam tries to make a person a real man. It elevates man to the level of real humanity. Therefore, Islam gives orders that will enable man to attain all kinds of perfect deeds and beauties, and it prohibits all kinds of deeds that lead to disgrace and ugliness.

Acting upon those universal rules, we can say that all kinds of deeds called swearing and cursing that offend and disturb people are sinful and haram. For, it is haram to offend Muslims and it makes man a sinner. It is forbidden in Islam to disturb even an unbeliever if he is innocent. For, the Prophet (pbuh) stated the following:

“If a person maltreats a dhimmi, I am his enemy.” (Abu Yusuf, Kharaj, Matbaatus- Salafiyya, 1397 H. Cairo, p. 135)

It is not permissible to swear and curse in any case. Swearing at anybody, whether an unbeliever or an oppressor, is an ugly deed that does not fit a Muslim.

Swearing at a person is a sin but it does not invalidate wudu.
