When we perform a prayer at home, is it permissible to call adhan or iqamah without standing or while walking?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Iqamah is called while standing. The person who calls iqamah turns toward the qiblah. It is sunnah to call adhan and iqamah by standing in the mosque for congregational prayers. If it is abandoned, it is makruh. However, a person who will perform a prayer at home can call adhan by sitting.

If a person who is travelling finds it difficult to get off his mount and call adhan, he can call adhan on the animal. It is not makruh.  However, he needs to get off his mount to call iqamah. If not, it is makruh. 1 The writer of al-Muhit states that iqamah on a mount is enough.

It is makruh for a person who is not travelling to call adhan on an animal because it is not necessary. Besides, the animal is not regarded as a high place. For, it can move any time and it is contrary to the holiness of adhan. However, it is not necessary to call an adhan called like that again.

In conclusion, adhan and iqamah called without standing are valid. However, it is sunnah to call them while standing.
