Is it more virtuous to make dhikr at times of karahah than to read the Quran?
Dear Brother / Sister,
During karahah times, only prayers are not performed; all of the other deeds of worship can be done. Those three times are the period between the sunrise and forty-five minutes after it, the time at noon when the sun is at its peak and before it starts to move to the east, and when the sun sets.
Therefore, it is permissible to read the Quran at those times. However, it is regarded more virtuous to say prayers (dua), to glorify Allah and to utter salawat for the Prophet (pbuh) than to read the Quran at karahah times.
Nevertheless, there are also some scholars who say it is more virtuous to read the Quran at those times. (see Celal Yıldırım, İslam Fıkhı, 4/151)
Accordingly, you can read the Quran by looking at the Quran or by heart any time of the day.
