Can a woman call adhan and iqamah? Is it necessary for women to call iqamah before fard prayers (performed on time or missed)?

The Details of the Question

Do women call adhan before fard prayers when they perform prayers at home?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

According to the majority of the mujtahids among whom are Hanafi imams, it is makruh for a woman to call adhan and iqamah. For, their voice will be tuneful, causing mischief. It does not matter whether the fard prayer is performed on time or as a missed prayer.

However, some imams say a woman can call adhan and iqamah for herself and other women.

For instance, Imam Malik says, “It will be nice if they call iqamah.”  Imam Shafii gives the following decree: “It is good for them to call adhan and iqamah.” According to the narration of Ibn Mundhir, Hz. Aisha called both adhan and iqamah. (Bidayatul-Mujtahid, I/110; al-Fiqhul-Islami wa Adillatuhu, I/42)

Accordingly, a woman does not have to call adhan and iqamah but if she calls on her own, she will get the reward of it. However, she cannot call adhan or iqamah aloud in the presence of non-mahram men.
