Should the knees be bent in ruku’ in prayer?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

What does Ruku’ mean?

It means to bend forward by placing the palms of the hands on the knees.

How is Ruku’ made?

The minimum requirement for ruku’ is to bow down by placing the hands on the knees. Ruku’ in accordance with the sunnah is as follows:

The upper part of the body is bent forward without bending the head, in a way parallel to the ground. The legs are not bent; they are kept straight; the hands are placed on the knees and the fingers grasp the knees. The head and the back are kept straight.

Women do not have to bow down so much as to keep the upper part of the body and the head parallel to the ground. It is enough for them to bow down in a way that will be close to that position.

A person who performs a prayer by sitting bends his back in a way to make it parallel to his knees.

Humpbacked people whose backs are parallel to the ground bend their heads only.

It is necessary not to bend the knees in ruku’.
