It seems that Muhammad’s prophethood is not possible according to the Torah and the Gospel. What is your view about it?

The Details of the Question

1. The following sentence exists in the Torah in Genesis 21:13: (But God said to him (Abraham), ‘Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned’.) It is stated in the previous verses, the Prophet Muhammad’s great grandfather, Ishmael and Hagar were expelled to the desert of Paran and that the prophethood through Ishmael was not possible.
- According to that verse, our Prophet Muhammad was not based on the lineage of Isaac and his prophethood was not possible because he was based on the lineage of Ishmael. What is your opinion about it?
- Is it because the Torah was changed and distorted or is there another explanation?
2. In the Bible, in Matthew 24:26, a man in the desert, a false Messiah in the desert is mentioned; and they say that this Messiah could be the Prophet Muhammad. Is it true?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

1. The following information exists in the Torah regarding the issue (21:13):

“I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring.”

In verse 18 of the same chapter, there is God’s promise that Ishmael will be made into a great ummah (nation). On the other hand, we could not find any information indicating that “prophethood will not come through Ishmael”.

The phrase “making an ummah” means that there will be an ummah from Ishmael’s descendants and therefore a prophet will come because there is no ummah without a prophet.

The greatest ummah from Ishmael’s descendants is the Islamic ummah and the greatest prophet is the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

It should be noted that in terms of scientific value, the Bible cannot be compared with the Quran, not even with the hadiths. A book that is subject to distortion even from translation to translation is in question...

However, for a believer in the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), no reference - regardless of its source - that contains information contrary to the Quran is acceptable and compatible with the consciousness of belief.

2. The following information exists in the Bible, Matthew 24: 22-27 in summary:

(Jesus) narrates: “At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear…”

The statement that “many liars will appear claiming to be the Messiah and prophets” indicates many liars, not just one in general. Indeed, many liars and impostors claiming prophethood appeared during and after the time of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

The emotional miracles of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) outnumber the miracles of other prophets; therefore, a person who does not accept the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), who holds in his hands a mental and spiritual miracle such as the Quran, which is a miracle in forty aspects, will not and cannot accept the prophethood of any prophet.

Anyone who doubts the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is either evil-minded or does not know him. May Allah grant all of us foresight and guidance! Amin!
