Is the cause of the death of the Prophet being poisoned?

The Details of the Question

- Allah promises in verse 67 of the chapter of al-Maida that He will protect the Prophet.

- Despite this verse of the Qur'an, how can you explain the fact that the reason of the death of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was poisoning during the Battle of Khaybar?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

- The following is stated in a verse: “…And Allah will defend thee from men (who mean mischief)...” (al-Maida, 5/67)

- How would you explain the fact that the cause of the death of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was being poisoned despite the verse above?

The Prophet (pbuh) was poisoned during the Battle of Khaybar. This battle took place at the beginning of the 7th year of the Migration. (al-Buti, Fiqhus-Sira, p. 329)

According to the narrations from Hz. Anas and Hz. Aisha, the Prophet (pbuh) became ill from time to time due to this poisoning after that; he sometimes had a fever, felt pain and suffered. (Ibn Hajar, 10/247)

The following is stated in the narration by Hz. Aisha:

“When the Messenger of Allah was in his deathbed, he said to me, ‘O Aisha! I still feel the pain caused by the food I ate at Khaybar, and at this time, I feel as if my aorta is being cut from that poison.’(Bukhari, Maghazi, 83; Ibn Hajar, 8/131)

Accordingly, the Prophet (pbuh) died about three or four years after he was poisoned. This is a different indication of the miraculous aspect of verse 67 of the chapter of al-Maida, which promises that the Prophet will be protected. For, if a poison shows its effect three or four years later, only Allah can suspend its lethal effect for four years. This is an indication that He kept His promise.

This incident also shows that causes cannot have effects independently and that they cannot affect anything without the permission of Allah. Allah knows but it is possible that Allah, who is Rahman and Rahim, wanted his beloved Prophet to have the degrees of the prophethood, sainthood and martyrdom all together when he died and ascended to His presence and Allah made the effect of that poison a reason for his death.
