What is the decree on working as a cook in a hotel where alcoholic drinks are served?
Dear Brother / Sister,
It is religiously haram to work in a building that is regarded as a sin in all aspects like a pub and brothel, and to sell goods to those places. For, the only aim of such a place is to commit illegitimate deeds. The issue of the hotel asked in the question is different. For, the aim in a hotel is not to sell alcoholic drinks but to accommodate tourists and guests in return for money. In other words, it is not haram to work in a hotel but it is haram to serve people alcoholic drinks.
The following is stated in al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya regarding an issue similar to that one:
"If a person writes lyrics in Arabic or Persian in return for money, the money he gets is not haram. For, it is not haram to write it but it is haram to sing it in an illegitimate way."
