Will you give information about the things the people following the imam need to do in prayers with congregation?

The Details of the Question

Performing prayers is fard. What do the people following the imam need to read silently in prayer? Will you give information about how to perform a four-rak'ah prayer?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

A person who follows the imam utters takbir and starts the prayer after the imam utters takbir.

When the imam bends down, he bends down too. He says the tasbihat in ruku'. When the imam gets up from ruku' by saying "Samiallahu liman hamidah", he says, "Rabbana lakal-hamd".

In prostration, he says the tasbihat of prostration.

In the first sitting of three or four-rak'ah prayers, only "at-Tahiyyat" is read. In the last sitting, "Salawat and Rabbena prayers are read along with at-Tahiyyat"; after that, he salutes with the imam.

According to Hanafis,

a person who follows the imam reads "Subhanaka" only and keeps silent. He does not read al-Fatiha and other verses.

It is makruh tahrimi for a person who follows the imam to read al-Fatiha and an additional chapter. For, the imam reads on behalf of the congregation. When the imam reads, it replaces the reading by the congregation.

This issue is clearly expressed in the hadith. Imam Muhammad regards it makruh for the congregation to read when the imam reads aloud but he regards it permissible for the congregation to read when the imam reads silently.
