What is the verse on which the hadith ‘It is fard to learn ilm (knowledge) for everybody, men and women’ based on? What is the source of the hadith?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

“It is fard to demand / learn ilm (knowledge) for every Muslim.” (Ibn Majah, Muqaddima, 17)

“Nor should the Believers all go forth together: if a contingent from every expedition remained behind, they could devote themselves to studies in religion, and admonish the people when they return to them,- that thus they (may learn) to guard themselves (against evil).” (at-Tawba, 9/122)

To learn ilm is shown as fard like jihad in the verse above.

The verse in which Allah orders His prophet and hence his ummah to pray in order to increase his ilm shows the importance of ilm:

“…Be not in haste with the Qur´an before its revelation to thee is completed, but say, ‘O my Lord! Advance me in knowledge’.” (Ta Ha, 20/114)

The most important indicator of slavery is the respect and fear of Allah. From this viewpoint, the following verse encourages indirectly learning ilm:

“…Those truly fear Allah, among His Servants, who have knowledge...” (Fatir, 35/28)
