With what verse did the Prophet explain the word "zulm (wrongdoing / oppression)" mentioned in verse 82 of the chapter of al-An’am?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Abdullah b. Mas'ud states the following regarding the issue: When the verse "…those who believe and confuse not their beliefs with wrong..." (al-An'am, 6/82) was revealed, the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) felt very sad and asked him, "O Messenger of Allah! Is there anyone among us who does not wrong himself?"

The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) answered them as follows:

"It is in the sense of associating partners with Allah. Did you not hear Luqman giving advice his son as follows: 'O my son! Join not in worship (others) with Allah: for false worship is indeed the highest wrong-doing.'?" (Bukhari, Anbiya, 41; Ahmad b. Hanbal, Musnad, 1/424)
