The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

When a person dies, it is sunnah for the people who are there to close the eyes of the dead person. According to what is reported from Umm Salama, when the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) came to Abu Salama when he died, his eyes were fixedly open. He closed them with his hands and said:

“When the soul is taken away the sight follows it. (Therefore, the eyes of the dead person remain open.)”

Thereupon, some of the people of Abu Salama’s family wept and wailed. The Prophet (pbuh) said to them,

“Do not supplicate for yourselves anything but good, for angels say "Amin" to what you say.” He then said:

“O Allah! Forgive Abu Salama! Raise his degree among those who are rightly guided, grant him a successor in his descendants who remain. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the Universe, and make his grave spacious, and grant him light in it.” (Muslim, Janaiz, 4)

Therefore, when a person dies, his eyes are open. We cannot decree based on the open eyes that a person went to the hereafter in a good or bad way.
