What are the states when it is permissible and wajib to interrupt a prayer? Can a person interrupt the prayer if his mother calls him?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

It is haram to interrupt the prayer. However, it is wajib to interrupt the prayer in certain states and permissible in certain states.

- If a person who is attacked or falls into water asks for help, it becomes wajib to interrupt the prayer to help him.

- If a wolf or a wild animal attacks a sheep herd, if a blind person or somebody who does not notice the danger faces the risk of falling into a well or down a roof, it is permissible to interrupt the prayer to help him. If the possibility to fall is high, it becomes wajib to interrupt the prayer.

- It is wajib for a midwife to interrupt the prayer if she is praying or to delay the prayer if she fears that the child to be born or the mother will die or one of the organs of the baby will be lost.

- It is permissible for the people who fear a wild animal, who face the danger of flood or fire, or who are facing the enemy to delay their prayer.

- If the mother or father of a person calls him while he is performing a nafilah prayer (and if he or she knows that he is praying), he can interrupt the prayer. If he or she does not know that their son is praying, it is wajib for him to interrupt the prayer.

- If a person is performing a fard prayer and if his mother or father calls him, he does not interrupt the prayer. However, if they ask for help due to a danger, it becomes wajib to interrupt the prayer.

- If something that is worth at least one dirham of silver faces the risk of being stolen (even if it belongs to someone else), it is permissible to interrupt the prayer even if it is a fard prayer.

- If a woman fears that the food in the saucepan will gush out or her child will cry and suffer pains, she can interrupt her prayer.
