Does Islam teach us to love our enemies too?

The Details of the Question

- The Prophet Isa (Jesus) is quoted as saying the following in the Gospel: “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” [Matthew 5:43-44]
- In Islam, we have no reason not to believe that this is something that Jesus actually said, right?
- Is it not in line with the teachings of Islam?
- Does Islam not teach us to love our enemies and wish the best for them too?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

The following two verses in the chapter of Al-Mumtahina answer your question:

Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just.

Allah only forbids you, with regard to those who fight you for (your) Faith, and drive you out of your homes, and support (others) in driving you out, from turning to them (for friendship and protection). It is such as turn to them (in these circumstances), that do wrong. (al-Mumtahina, 60/8, 9)

As for loving,

Yes, we pray for the people of other religions and beliefs to be guided and to become Muslims, but loving is another thing; love does not occur based on a command. Allah does not give such a command.
