Can women use medication in order to delay menstrual bleeding in Ramadan?

The Details of the Question

My wife takes medication to delay menstrual bleeding in order to fast in the whole month of Ramadan. Is it permissible?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

It is religiously permissible to take precautions by taking some medication so as not to menstruate in order to fast in the whole month of Ramadan, to read the Quran and to worship more easily.

As a matter of fact, some women delayed menstruation in the Era of Bliss. They used a liquid called “araq water” to delay menstrual bleeding. Abdullah bin Umar says it is permissible to use this water. It is possible to delay menstrual bleeding by using some medication today.

However, this practice is not advised by doctors since it can cause some disorders in terms of medicine and health.

Accordingly, it is permissible for women who want to spend Ramadan easily and to perform fasting in time to use medication in order to delay menstrual bleeding. However, it is better for those who have irregular menstrual cycles and disorders related to menstrual bleeding not to resort to it.
