Under what conditions does a creditor have to sacrifice an animal in eid al-adha?

The Details of the Question

I have some cash now. I lent my father some money but I am not sure if he will pay it back. The money I have now does not reach nisab amount but if I add the money that I lent, it reaches nisab amount. I want to sacrifice an animal in eid al-adha.      Is it wajib for me to sacrifice an animal under these conditions? If it is not wajib, can I still sacrifice an animal?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Receivables are divided into three:

1. Strong receivables,
2. Medium receivables,
3. Weak receivables.

1. Strong receivables: The money and commercial goods given as debt are regarded as strong receivables. If such receivables are not denied by the debtor or if they are denied but there are documents or witnesses about the debt, it is wajib to pay zakah for them. It is also necessary to pay zakah of the previous years. However, zakah can be delayed until the money is received.

Accordingly, if your receivable is equal to or more than gold nisab amount, you need to pay zakah for each year that passed.

2. Medium receivables: Non-commercial goods like old clothes and the money for the house that is dwelled.

They are included in the calculation of zakah beginning from the year when the customer receives them; zakah is not paid for them unless nisab amount is received.

3. Weak receivables: They are the receivables that are not in return for some goods like inheritance, mahr and diyah. They are not subject to zakah unless one year passes after receiving them when they reach nisab amount.

Accordingly, if your receivable is strong and if you have enough money to sacrifice an animal, you have to sacrifice it in eid al-adha.

A person can sacrifice an animal even if it is not wajib for him.
