Can I intend to perform my missed (qada) prayers while performing tarawih prayer according to Shafii madhhab?

The Details of the Question

Can I intend my missed (qada) prayers while performing tarawih prayer in Shafii madhhab? If it is possible, how should I intend?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

According to Shafii madhhab, missed prayers can be performed instead of tarawih prayer.

For instance, the following intention can be said for a missed (qada) prayer:

"I intend to perform for the sake of Allah the first (the last) noon prayer that I missed."

Thus, the missed prayers start to be performed from the last one or the first one; in either case, the missed prayers decrease based on a certain order.

To make it easier, it is enough to intend as follows: "I intend to perform a missed noon or afternoon prayer that is incumbent on me."

When a Shafii person intends to perform four-rak'ah missed prayers while following the imam who is leading tarawih prayer, he needs to stand up - by leaving the imam - when the imam salutes after the second rak'ah and complete the remaining two rak'ahs alone or he can wait for the imam without saluting and complete the following rak'ahs with the imam.

As a matter of fact, the following example is given in fiqh resources:

“A person can perform a morning prayer after an imam who is leading a noon prayer (it means one of them is a missed prayer). When the imam stands up for the third rak'ah, that person can salute leaving the imam or wait until the imam performs two more rak'ahs and salute with the imam. It is more appropriate to wait.”(see Nawawi, Majmu, IV/247;  Vahba Zuhayli, al-Fiqhu’l-Islami, II/227)
