Is it permissible for a man to be a gynecologist?
Dear Brother / Sister,
It is haram to open one’s private parts unless it is necessary. The decree changes when there is a necessity like birth, operation and circumcision. In that case, a person can open his/her private parts to the extent that it is necessary. If it is enough to open a handbreadth of the private parts, it is haram to open more. If it is enough to open a certain part, it is haram to open and to look at the other parts.
It is appropriate for a woman to prefer a female doctor. However, if it is not possible, it is permissible to give girth under the supervision of a male doctor.
A woman who is ill may need treatment, cure and operation. When a woman becomes ill, she can see only a qualified female doctor, but if there are no female qualified doctors, she can see a male doctor. Otherwise, it is a sin for her to see a male doctor. Similarly, a man has to see a qualified male doctor. He can see a female doctor if there are no male qualified doctors. (Badaius-Sanai, 6/2962)
