Is the water of a fish aquarium dirty?
Dear Brother / Sister,
If something that is not najis (impure/dirty) falls into a small amount of still water and if it changes one of the three properties of water, namely its taste, odor and color, that water is regarded clean but it is not used in cleaning.
If something that is najis falls into a small amount of still water and if it changes one of the three properties of water, namely its taste, odor and color, that water is regarded as najis. Therefore, it is necessary to be careful. If one of those three properties of water has not changed, it is not najis and it does not harm worship.
The excrement of fish is stated to be najis that is ignored in water by scholars due to necessity. (see al-Mawsuatul-Fiqhiyya, 2/14224-Shamila). However, if it is harmful to health, the water in the aquarium needs to be cleaned. Today, it is known that the water in the aquarium becomes dirty due to the excrement of the fish, residues of fish feed, other biological waste and metals. Therefore, experts say it is necessary to change at least 20% of the aquarium water every week. If the volume of the water is more than 250 liters, it is enough to change the water once a month.
