People mention reading the chapter of Yasin 41 times; is it sound? Are there hadiths about the virtues of Yasin?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

The chapter of Yasin is a chapter that is read by Muslims a lot. It is preferred more than the other chapters. There are various hadiths that Hz. Muhammad (pbuh) uttered and advised us to read it. Some of those hadiths are as follows:

"Everything has a heart. The heart of the Quran is Yasin. If a person reads Yasin, Allah gives him rewards as if he has read the Quran ten times." (Tirmidhi, Fadailul-Quran, 7; Darimi, Fadailul-Quran, 21).

"Yasin is like the heart of the Quran. If a person reads Yasin by wishing Allah and the Day of Judgment, his previous sins are forgiven. Read it to your dead people." (Abu Dawud, Janaiz 20; Ibn Majah, Janaiz 4; Ibn Hanbal, Musnad V, 26, 27).

As it is understood from the hadiths above, it is permissible to read Yasin and send its thawab to the spirits of the dead. However, it should not be forgotten that the Quran was sent down to the living people so that they would understand it and live in accordance with its orders and prohibitions.

The chapter of Yasin ends with the following verses, which indicate the existence of Allah, His superior power and the hereafter:

"Is not He Who created the heavens and the earth able to create the like thereof?" - Yea, indeed! for He is the Creator Supreme, of skill and knowledge (infinite)! Verily, when He intends a thing, His Command is, "be", and it is! So glory to Him in Whose hands is the dominion of all things: and to Him will ye be all brought back." (Yasin, 36/81-83)

There is no nass that orders or advices to read or say duas, dhikrs, salawat, verses and chapters a certain amount of times like reading Tafrijiyya  4444 times or Yasin 41 times (except saying Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah and Allahuakbar 33 times after prayers and a few more duas/dhikrs). A Muslim can read the salawat called Tafrijiyya and the chapter of Yasin as many times as he wishes.

If a person says, "It is sunnah, fard or the order of the religion to read this ….. times" or believes like that, it becomes a bid’ah.

If he says "It becomes (has become) useful to read this ……. times" reads and advices it to others based on his or another person’s experience without having a belief like that, it is not regarded as a bid’ah and there is no drawback to it.
