Is it mentioned in the Quran how to perform prayers?

The Details of the Question

Some people say it is written in the Quran how to perform prayers. Is it mentioned in the Quran how to perform prayers?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

Parts of the prayer like qira’ah (reading), ruku’ (bowing down) and sajdah (prostration) are mentioned in the Quran but there is no explanation at what times and as how many rak’ahs prayers are performed. The Prophet (pbuh) has two main duties:

Tabligh (proclamation, conveying the message) (al-Maida, 67) and tabyin/bayan (explanation) (an-Nahl, 44).

Tabligh, which is one of those two duties, means to convey the text of the revelation to people.

Tabyin means to explain the text of the revelation.

The lack of the details of the deeds of worship like prayer, zakah, hajj and fasting in the Quran means they are included in the scope of the duty of tabyin

The duty of tabyin of the Prophet (pbuh) makes it necessary for him to interpret the verses of the Quran. Verbal, actual and approving sunnah are included in this interpretation. An important reason for it is to prevent the Prophet from being a mailman who delivers the message only and retires to watch it from a distance, and to enable him to be together with the Quran all the time, to practice it with his words, deeds and approval and make others practice it.

The Prophet (pbuh) explains the concise verses of the Quran, specifies the general ones and limits the absolute ones.

“…So take what the Messenger assigns to you, and deny yourselves that which he withholds from you…” (al-Hashr, 7)

Attention is attracted to the importance of his sunnah in the verse above.

“He who obeys the Messenger, obeys Allah...” (an-Nisa, 80)

The high rank of the Prophet (pbuh) is emphasized in the verse above.

The aim of those who claim that “it is stated in the Quran how to perform prayers” is to exclude the Prophet (pbuh) and to put aside the sunnah/hadiths.

To sum up, the claim that the details of “how to perform prayers” exist in the Quran is not true. It is not possible to show even one verse about it.
