Does joining the sacrifice (qurbani) of an animal only with the intention of meat harm the other shareholders?

The Details of the Question

- It is permissible to have one to seven shares in the sacrifice of cattle. If one of those shareholders join just to obtain meat and he has no intention of sacrifice, will it invalidate the other shares?

The Answer

Dear Brother / Sister,

One of the conditions of sacrificing an animal is that it be sacrificed with the intention of worship.

It is necessary for the sacrifice to be slaughtered with the intention of worship. It is stated in the Quran that not the meat and blood of the sacrificed animals but the intention, piety and devotion of the Muslim who slaughters them will reach Allah.

“It is not their meat nor their blood, that reaches Allah. it is your piety that reaches Him: He has thus made them subject to you, that ye may glorify Allah for His Guidance to you and proclaim the good news to all who do right.” (al-Hajj, 22/37)

Essentially, that is what distinguishes sacrifice from other animal slaughters. What matters in intention is the intention of the heart; it does not have to be expressed clearly with the tongue. It is because of this importance of intention in sacrifice that;

In Hanafi madhhabs, all shareholders must participate in the joint sacrifice with the intention of worship. The participation of one of the shareholders with the sole intention of obtaining meat invalidates the sacrifice of the others.

According to the Shafii and Hanbali madhhabs, such a partnership does not harm the worship of sacrifice. (see İslam ve Toplum İlmihali II, Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı)
