Will you explain the meaning of verse 5 of the chapter of ad-Duha and the reason why it was sent down?
Dear Brother / Sister,
The meaning of the verse in question is as follows:
"And soon will thy Guardian-Lord give thee (that wherewith) thou shalt be well-pleased." (Duha, 93/5)
Your Lord will give you such favors in the future and grant you so much from His benevolence and treats that you will be fully satisfied, you will attain His consent, all your wishes will come true, you will experience no sadness, sorrow and trouble, and you will not be worried so much as to ask the question "What will happen?" You will be pleased in the realm of peace and eternity.
Since the grace and bestowal are expressed in the future tense, it is doubtless that when there is a valuable promise about perfection and the hereafter; however, it also includes all of the bestowals in the Era of the Prophet and the ones after that era like the personal enlightenment in the world, knowing the sciences of the predecessors and successors, the occurrence of order, elevating the religion with conquests and being successful in the struggles to spread the truth and good deeds.
As a matter of fact, the divine help and victories that started with the Migration, the spread of Islam with the conquest of Makkah and the other achievements occurred after that. The following interpretations were made about the thing(s) to be given to the Prophet in the future:
- Ibn Abu Hatim Hasan said "It is intercession."
- The following is stated in a narration reported from Ibn Abbas: "His consent is based on his whole ummah’s entering Paradise." (Elmalılı, the interpretation of the verse in question)
The reason why the chapter of ad-Duha was sent down: After the chapter of al-Fajr was sent down, revelation ceased for a while. Due to this interval, the polytheists said to the Prophet, "Your Lord is probably displeased with you and has forsaken you." The Prophet (pbuh) felt sorry due to this statement; thereupon, this chapter was sent down. (see Tabari, Tafsir, XXX, 148)
