The Fifteenth Proof : The Power of God is Infinite
Regarding this proof, we will deal with the rule: “If something is essential, its opposite cannot have access to the essence defined by that thing because that would be equivalent to the union of opposites, which is impossible. “
Regarding this proof, we will deal with the rule: “If something is essential, its opposite cannot have access to the essence defined by that thing because that would be equivalent to the union of opposites, which is impossible. “
First of all, let us study the meanings of the words in the rule:
Essential: That exists inherently, that cannot be added later, belonging to the essence; access: reaching something later; union of opposites: two opposite things coming together; impossible: that cannot take place, absurd
No attribute of any creature in this realm is essential. That is, they do not belong to them; they are the grants and gifts of God Almighty because the universe and the creatures in it were created later. That is, they are not pre-eternal. The attributes of something that is not pre-eternal cannot be eternal and essential. However, in order to be able to understand the sentence of Said Nursi quoted above, we will regard some things essential. Although those attributes were created later, they could be regarded as essential to a certain extent because they had been attached to things the moment they were created.
For instance, the light of the sun is to some extent essential. The sun had its light the moment it was created. Therefore, darkness, which is the opposite of light, cannot be attached to the sun; that is, darkness cannot approach the sun, because this is a rule: “If something is essential, its opposite cannot have access to the essence defined by that thing.”
However, the light of a lamp is not essential; that is, it can be added to the piece of glass later and the light is not its inherent character; therefore, darkness, which is the opposite of light, can be attached to a lamp.
2nd Example:The heat of the sun is to some extent essential. The sun had this attribute the moment it was created. Therefore, cold, which is the opposite of heat, cannot approach the sun because when something is essential, its opposite cannot be attached to it.
As for the heat of the stove, its heat is not essential; that is, the stove has the attribute of heat after something is burnt in it. Therefore, cold can be attached to the stove. The stove whose wood burns away gets cold after a while.
3rd Example:The brightness of some materials like gold and diamond is to some extent essential; therefore, they do not fade or turn black. When something is essential, its opposite cannot be attached to it.
The brightness of a polished object is something added to it; therefore, it is bound to fade and turn black. Dullness, which is the opposite of brightness, can approach that object and can cause it to fade.
4th Example:The movement of the world and its rotation around its axis is to some extent essential; therefore, stillness, which is the opposite of movement, is not in question for the world. It always rotates.
However, the movement of a peg-top or a bicycle wheel is something additional; that is, rotating, turning or spinning, is not their essential attribute; so, they can be still.
CONCLUSION: If something is essential, its opposite cannot have access to the essence defined by that thing.
The power of God is essential. That is, it is inherent. It is not something taken from somebody else or acquired afterwards. God is pre-eternal and his attributes are also pre-eternal, endless and absolute.
We can list the results of this study as follows:
· Since the attribute of power is an essential attribute of God, weakness, which is its opposite, is not in question for God.
· Since weakness is not in question for God, there cannot be degrees in the power of God.
· Since there are no degrees in His power, He can create thousands of universes at any moment if His wisdom lets. There is no difference in the deed of giving light by the sun for a drop or for an ocean, for a flower or for a star; similarly, little or much, big or small, partial or universal are the same for the power of God. In the creation and administration, particles and stars are equal. To give life to a fly is no different from reviving all of the dead people. He can create a flower easily; He can create the spring and Paradise as easily.
The following results can be deduced from the above-mentioned rule:
· Life is an essential attribute of God. Therefore, death, which is the opposite of life, cannot approach Him; God is eternal.
· Sight is an essential attribute of God. Therefore, blindness, which is the opposite of sight, is not in question for God; He observes everything at the same time; nothing can be hidden from His sight.
· Hearing is an essential attribute of God. Therefore, deafness, which is the opposite of hearing, is not in question for God; He hears all of the voices and sounds, and even what the hearts feel at the same time.
· The beauty of God is essential. Doubtlessly, ugliness, which is the opposite of beauty, is not in question for God.
· Knowledge is an essential attribute of God. Doubtlessly, ignorance, which is the opposite of knowledge, is not in question for God. If it is not in question, the following are in question: God knows the fish swimming hundreds of meters deep under the sea. He knows the ant walking in the darkness of the night. No leaf can fall off a tree without His knowledge. God knows what people feel in their hearts…. They all originate from the fact that knowledge is an essential attribute of God. Not to know even one of them is ignorance. Since the attribute of knowledge is essential, ignorance, which is its opposite, is not in question for God; and God knows everything.
· All of the other attributes of God can be seen through this rule.
Along with the rule mentioned above, it will be useful to study the following rule, too: “The degrees of existence of a thing are through the intervention of its opposites.” We can understand this rule through the following examples:
· The degrees of light are through the intervention of darkness, which is the opposite of light.
· The degrees of heat are through the intervention of cold, which is the opposite of heat.
· The degrees of beauty are through the intervention of ugliness, which is the opposite of beauty.
· The degrees of fullness are through the intervention of hunger, which is the opposite of fullness.
· The degrees of strength are through the intervention of another strength opposite to it….
That is, our rule is this: If the opposite of something cannot intervene it, there exist no degrees in it:
· God has no opposite.
· Since God has no opposite, there is no intervention in the deeds of God.
· Since there is no intervention, there are no degrees in the power of God. His power is endless.
· Since His power is endless, it is equal for His power to create a flower or the spring, to revive a fly or to create all of the creatures. Nothing can prevent it.
The work “Belief in the Hereafter” is completed here. As we have mentioned at the beginning of this work, we have used “the Booklet of Resurrection” known as “the 10th Word” by Said Nursi as reference. In this work, we have mentioned only some of the evidence mentioned by Said Nursi. We refer those who want to find out about the other evidence to the above-mentioned book by Said Nursi and end this work with the following verses of the Quran:
“The Unbelievers will be led to Hell in crowds; until, when they arrive there, its gates will be opened and its Keepers will say "Did not messengers come to you from among yourselves rehearsing to you the Signs of your Lord, and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?" The answer will be: "True: but the Decree of Punishment has been proved true against the Unbelievers!
(To them) will be said: "Enter ye the gates of Hell, to dwell therein: and evil is (this) abode of the arrogant!"
And those who feared their Lord will be led to the Garden in crowds: until behold, they arrive there; its gates will be opened: and its Keepers will say: "Peace be upon you! Well have ye done! Enter ye here, to dwell therein."
They will say: "Praise be to Allah, Who has truly fulfilled His promise to us, and has given us (this) land in heritage: we can dwell in the Garden as we will: how excellent a reward for those who work (righteousness)!" (az-Zumar 71-74)
