I want to cover up, but my family won’t let me!

It is a pity that when a person wants to practice their religion, they sometimes face pressure from those closest to them, even their family. This is sometimes how the test manifests itself. My sister who says, “I want to cover up, but my family wants me to uncover my head, what should I do?”! Our Lord states the following regarding the issue: “And We have enjoined on man (to be good) to his parents… But if they strive to make thee join in worship with Me things of which thou hast no knowledge, do not obey them… Then to Me is your return, then will I inform you of what you did.” (Luqman, verses 14, 15)

Yes, it is a commandment of Allah to fulfill the wishes and desires of parents and not to oppose them. However, obedience to parents is not permissible in matters of sin. If parents command their child to disobey Allah, to deny Him, to refrain from what He has made obligatory, or to do what He has forbidden, their wishes must not be fulfilled. In matters of disobedience to Allah, obedience to people, even parents, is not permissible. When the Lord of the Worlds says “cover up,” it is not within the rights of anyone, including parents, to say “no, uncover your head.” And obeying and following them in this matter makes a person sinful. 
Yes, my sister who wants to cover up in obedience to Allah’s command! Know that your parents have no such right over you, and you are not obligated to obey them in this matter. Your family, which needs to protect you from this sin today but leads you into it, will not be able to save you on that day and will flee from you. Our Lord states the following in the Quran:

“At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,- That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, And from his mother and his father, And from his wife and his children. Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others.” (Abasa, 80/33-37)

What you should do is to say, “I cannot act contrarily to my faith”, not to sacrifice the truth for any other consideration, to immediately obey our Lord’s command regarding covering up and to pray for their improvement.
