Does a newly converted Muslim need to repent?
Is repentance obligatory for a new convert to Islam? Must a new Muslim seek forgiveness from Allah for past sins or mistakes?
Dear Brother / Sister,
A newly converted Muslim is not required to repent because they are not held accountable for their past disbelief, false beliefs, or actions that are forbidden and sinful to Muslims related to the rights of Allah.
Would repentance still be better?
It is not obligatory but seeking forgiveness from Allah by praying is considered a commendable act as it demonstrates sincerity and humility, and strengthens a spiritually new beginning.
Regarding rights of other people:
A Muslim is not liable for retaliation or compensation for crimes committed during a state of war with Muslims, even after converting to Islam.
If a non-Muslim commits a crime that he should not have committed due to his previous status before converting to Islam, he is held responsible for it. For example, a non-Muslim who is a citizen (dhimmi) in an Islamic state kills a Muslim and then converts to Islam, is held responsible for the murder.
Furthermore, if a convert wronged someone, took their property, or caused them harm before becoming a Muslim, it is advisable to seek forgiveness from them or compensate for the damage if possible.
